The lampshades you see are unique. They are made by my own fair hand in my Northampton studio. The shades are unique as they have a silhouette design only seen when the light is switched on. The designs are my own, created from scratch. Some of them however are inspired by my collection of fifties wallpaper :). The retro kitsch designs displayed in a simple yet bold graphic style make the products sleek and stylish.
The process is top secret (ssshhhh) but involves the designs being cut out of specialist vinyl with my beloved vinyl cutter, and also printing the available colours onto heavy weight FSC accredited lining paper. It has taken me about two years to perfect the technique (with some cursing along the way) and research the best materials, so you know you are getting a truly individual and lovingly handmade product from right here in the UK!
The cushions are UK manufactured, printed and made (by me!), with a duck feather inner pad and envelope back. The designs are printed on organic cotton twill and the cushions are nice and plump.
Because of how the products are made it is totally possible to produce bespoke colours, or even bespoke designs at an extra cost which can be discussed. I’d be very happy to work with you! I’m very friendly and understanding. I don’t bite unless I’ve not had my morning tea yet!
I have been lucky enough to have supportive friends and family to help me along my journey. I feel now I have found my niche, with my own distinctive style and process. Like so many designer-makers, I am a perfectionist – so you can feel confident that when you receive your lampshade it will have been worth the wait. I’m very proud of my work and take great pride in making my products with loving (and slightly neurotic) care.
A bit about how I got here
Driven by an inherent life-long passion and compulsion, most likely due to my entire family is involved in art & design in some way, I’ve always wanted to create. The love of design with purpose most likely came from my BA and MA in Surface Design, where a design/pattern is applied to a surface, generally for a product of some nature.
The journey to what I do now has been quite long and varied – starting with my MA completed in 2007. It’s certainly been an exciting one! My first business venture of upcycling furniture fell flat after I moved to Brighton and discovered everyone was doing it.
Junkyard Chic – my first creative venture!
The income from my second venture, making mugs and coasters etc, just wasn’t enough to make a living out of.
Betty Knows Best – always close to my heart.
I decided I needed to start from scratch with an original concept for a necessary product. So now I am a lampshade maker!
I’d like to branch out into other products to establish a recognisable brand identity, so I am able to express my passions for graphics, typography, and bold sometimes retro styles (I heart fifties which is evident in my work!), in a truly unique way. I feel my wares are both tactile and useful with strong imagery. The colours can be easily adjusted to all tastes and trends, making Doris’ products are as flexible as individual tastes. I hope you enjoy my website and work. If you have any comments please feel free to drop me a line!
